Canon launches C300 cinema camera, prepares to take on Red Scarlet and Arri Alexa — Engadget. Theres been a lot of speculation about this – but it makes sense. About a year ago Vincent Laforet (who kinda started the whole DSLR video movement with his short film “Reverie” shot on a Canon 5DII) was changing his stance from “DSLR will revolutionize Indy Cinema” to a – “theres lots of short comings with DSLR and you have to accept that some cameras are better suited to different applications”  At the time I mentioned his “turn-coat” and asked why the change of heart – OK he WAS standing at a CANON stand and being paid to be there so I guess you have to respect the Pipers wishes. In hindsight though I wonder if he had been brought in to the very early concept stages of planning the C300 in consultation with Canon – under a strict Non Disclosure Agreement no doubt. Anyway – conspiracies and meanderings aside. Make no mistake – this camera is aimed firmly at the Arri Alexa and RED Epic. Its 4K sensor sounds impressive – why limit it to 1080p though??? At about $16k body only it will be out of most of our price ranges, particularly if you opt for the PL mount – the lenses are beautiful but Very Expensive. Im looking forward to seeing the first images from it though! P.S. David Lawless – you’re very well informed my man. 🙂
